EPDM rubber cold-shrink tube covers 500-800 MCM wire, shrinking from 1.94 in to .95 in over a 12 in length
The 3M 8428-12 is a medium-wall cold shrink insulator designed for wire sizes from 500 MCM to 800 MCM. It installs without heat tools, making it practical for field repairs or permanent splices on large conductors. The tube is supplied as individual pieces ready for immediate use.
The EPDM rubber material operates from -40 degrees to 194 degrees F and provides UV light resistance for outdoor exposure. It carries a dielectric strength of 1,000 V and is not flame retardant. No adhesive lining is present, so the seal relies on the shrink force alone.
The tube arrives with a 1.94 in inside diameter and shrinks to 0.95 in after the core is removed. Its 12 in length covers standard splice areas on the rated wire range. Builders must verify the final diameter fits their specific cable insulation before installation.

Slide the pre-expanded tube over the cable joint, then unwind the removable core to let the EPDM rubber shrink onto 500–800 MCM wire; the step often missed is confirming the core is fully removed so the tube seats at 0.95 in I.D.
The medium-wall EPDM rubber is UV-light-resistant and rated from -40 to 194 °F, so no scheduled maintenance is required; replace only if physical damage or dielectric breakdown above 1,000 V occurs.
The maximum temperature rating of 194 °F is the first limit reached under continuous load; exceeding it can degrade the rubber’s dielectric strength of 1,000 V.
