What this valve does and who uses it

The Adafruit ADA-997 is a plastic water solenoid valve that opens when 12 V DC is applied to its two terminals. It has two 1/2 inch nominal NPT outlets and a gasket that requires at least 0.02 MPa (3 PSI) to operate. Liquid flows in one direction only, making it suitable for robotic gardening or similar fluid-control projects.

What to verify before ordering

Your system must supply at least 0.02 MPa (3 PSI) water pressure or the valve will not open. The inlet and outlet are 1/2 inch nominal NPT, so existing piping must match that thread standard. Flow is unidirectional; confirm the installation orientation matches the required direction. The valve is not rated for food safety or fluids other than water.

How the drive circuit

A TIP120 transistor or N-channel power FET with a 1N4001 kickback diode is recommended to switch the coil from a microcontroller pin. At 12 V the coil draws 320 mA; at 6 V it draws 160 mA but opens more slowly. Adafruit suggests a 9 V 1 A or 12 V 1 A power adapter for the supply. A brass version without the minimum-pressure limit and with bidirectional flow is available separately.
