What this iPad Air 1 is

This Apple iPad Air 1 from 2013 is a 9.7 inch Wi-Fi tablet with 64 GB of storage in Space Grey. It has an IPS LCD display measuring 240 by 169.5 by 7.5 mm and weighs 469 grams. The condition is new and the unit carries a B grade, meaning the body may show dents, chips or scuffs and the screen may have hairline scratches.

Who it suits and who it does not

This tablet suits buyers who need a lightweight 9.7 inch iPad for basic tasks and accept that the software cannot be upgraded. It does not suit buyers who need current operating system support, more than 64 GB of storage, cellular connectivity beyond the Nano-SIM slot, or a device free of cosmetic marks on the chassis or screen.

The specification that decides fit

The 9.7 inch IPS LCD with a 71.6 percent screen-to-body ratio and the A7 chip running at 1.39 GHz define the performance ceiling. The 64 GB capacity and the inability to upgrade the operating system are the limiting factors for modern app compatibility. The 13 hour battery claim and 469 gram weight complete the usage profile.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 64GB Space Grey Wi-Fi model or the cellular version?

The Wi-Fi model weighs 469 g and measures 240 x 169.5 x 7.5 mm; the cellular model is 478 g with the same footprint.

What does the 1.39 GHz A7 chip mean for everyday use?

It powers iOS 7-era apps and light browsing, but the tablet cannot be upgraded past its final supported iOS version.

How does the Lightning connector limit charging and data speed?

The Lightning port caps charging and sync at USB 2.0 rates, so large transfers take longer than on newer USB-C iPads.
