First-generation iPad Air for light tasks

The Apple iPad Air A1474 ships with iOS 12 and a 9.7-inch Retina display. Its 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of built-in storage handle email, web browsing and casual apps. Wi-Fi connectivity keeps the tablet online at home or on public networks. The silver aluminium chassis weighs little enough for daily carry in a bag.

Sustained use on a legacy platform

Apple rates the battery for up to 10 hours of mixed activity such as video playback and web surfing. The A7 chip manages heat without active cooling, so performance stays steady during long reading or streaming sessions. iOS 12 no longer receives security updates, leaving the device exposed to unpatched vulnerabilities. Apps that require newer APIs will refuse to install or crash at launch.

Replaces an original iPad or first tablet purchase

Owners of the iPad 2, 3 or 4 gain a thinner body, lighter weight and a faster processor with this model. The jump is worthwhile only for users who need basic media consumption and do not require current apps. Buyers who need more storage, a modern operating system or support for the latest software should look elsewhere.

Questions about this item

How much heat or fan noise does the iPad Air A1474 produce when used continuously for 10 hours?

The iPad Air A1474 has no internal fan, so it runs silently. Under sustained load the aluminium chassis becomes warm to the touch but stays within normal operating limits.

Which accessories must I already own to charge and use the iPad Air A1474 out of the box?

A UL-approved power adapter and charging cable are included, so no extra charger is required. You only need an existing Wi-Fi network and an Apple ID to complete setup.

Will the iPad Air A1474 running iOS 12 work with my older 30-pin dock or Lightning audio gear?

This model uses a Lightning port, so 30-pin docks need an adapter. Lightning headphones or the included cable work directly; Bluetooth keyboards and speakers pair normally.
