Hazardous-Location Reducing Bushing

The Appleton Century Crofts reducing bushing connects 2 1/2 inch female NPT threads to 4 inch male NPT threads in hazardous-location conduit systems. It is rated for Class I Division 1 and 2, Groups B, C, D, Class I Zone 1 and 2, Groups IIA, IIB + H2, Class II Division 1 and 2, Groups E, F, G, and Class III environments. The iron body carries a chromate, powder-coat and electroplated finish. Electrical contractors working in classified areas use this fitting to step down conduit trade sizes safely.

Conduit and Thread Verification

Confirm that the existing raceway uses IMC or threaded RMC in the 2 1/2 inch and 4 inch trade sizes before ordering. The fitting requires a female-threaded 2 1/2 inch entry and a male-threaded 4 inch exit. Verify that the hazardous-location classification of the installation matches the ratings listed above. The overall length is 1 7/16 inches, so ensure adequate space within the enclosure or conduit body.

Stepping Down Conduit Trade Sizes

This bushing replaces a straight coupling when a reduction from 4 inch to 2 1/2 inch conduit is required in a classified area. The jump is worth it when the design calls for a smaller branch circuit or equipment connection downstream of a larger feeder raceway. It is not for use with non-threaded conduit types such as EMT or PVC, nor for installations outside the listed hazardous-location classes.

Questions about this item

What comes in the box and do I need to buy any additional fittings?

The box contains the reducing bushing only. No extra fittings are included; compatible IMC or threaded RMC conduit must be purchased separately.

How do I choose between the 2 1/2 in and 4 in trade sizes?

Select the size that matches your existing conduit. The bushing has a 2 1/2 in FNPT female end and a 4 in MNPT male end to transition between those trade sizes.

What does the Class I Division 1 rating mean when the bushing is installed?

It certifies the fitting for use in hazardous locations where flammable gases or vapours may be present under normal conditions, Groups B, C and D.
