ARRIS SURFboard S33 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem

The ARRIS SURFboard S33 is a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem built for households that want to stop paying monthly rental fees. It connects to major U.S. cable providers including Comcast Xfinity, Cox and Spectrum. Two Ethernet ports provide 1 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps links to a router or wired device. The modem supports 4 OFDM channels for modern network capacity.

Upgrading from DOCSIS 3.0 equipment

DOCSIS 3.1 is 10x faster than DOCSIS 3.0 and enables multi-gig networking over the same coaxial cable. The jump is worth it when your internet plan exceeds 1 Gbps or when you want lower latency for gaming and streaming. Buyers staying on plans below 1 Gbps will not see a speed benefit from this modem.

Practical limits of the 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port

The 2.5 Gbps port caps total throughput at 2.5 Gbps even if the DOCSIS 3.1 link could deliver more. Real-world speed depends on the provider's provisioned tier and network congestion. The single 2.5 Gbps port also means only one high-speed device can connect directly without an additional switch.
