What the SB6183 is

The ARRIS Surfboard SB6183 is a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem that bonds 16 downstream and 4 upstream channels. It supports a maximum downstream speed of 686 Mbps and is certified for major US cable providers including Comcast Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox and Cablevision. It suits households that want to stop paying a monthly rental fee for a basic internet plan.

Thermals noise and power

The unit runs without a fan so it produces no audible noise during normal operation. Its compact enclosure dissipates heat passively through the top vents. Power draw remains low and stable because the modem only handles the DOCSIS link without any integrated Wi-Fi or routing functions.

What the package adds

The box includes a power adapter and a coaxial cable so the modem can be connected to the wall outlet and mains immediately. A short Ethernet cable is also supplied for a direct link to a router or computer. No configuration software is required; the device is activated by the provider once it registers on the network.

Questions about this item

How do I connect the SB6183 to my router after the coaxial cable is screwed in?

Attach the coaxial cable from the wall outlet to the modem, then link the modem's Ethernet port to your router's WAN port with a Cat 5e or better cable; the step most people miss is rebooting the router after the modem registers so it pulls a fresh IP address

What part of the SB6183 will need attention or replacement after a few years of service?

The internal power supply and electrolytic capacitors are the first components to age; if the modem loses sync or reboots spontaneously, a new 12 V power adapter often restores reliable operation

At what throughput does the SB6183 hit its hard ceiling during a long download?

The DOCSIS 3.0 16x4 channel bonding tops out at 686 Mbps downstream, so sustained transfers cannot exceed that figure regardless of the provisioned tier
