What this adapter does

This adapter connects a legacy mini 6-pin PCIe power cable to the mini 8-pin PCIe power socket found on Mac Pro models from 2019 onward. It lets owners of earlier Mac Pro power cables keep using them when upgrading to a newer motherboard. The plug-and-play design requires no tools or technical expertise.

Capacity and headroom

The adapter bridges the physical difference between the two mini connector types so the existing cable can deliver power to the new socket. It handles the current load for which the original cable and motherboard header are rated. It does not increase the power available beyond the limits of the original cable or the motherboard connector.

Practical limits of the interface

The mini 8-pin socket on 2019+ Mac Pro motherboards will not accept the older mini 6-pin plug without this adapter. Conversely, the adapter cannot make a mini 8-pin cable fit a mini 6-pin header, nor does it adapt standard full-size PCIe power connectors. It is specific to the Mac Pro mini connector transition.
