External DVD±RW drive with USB 2.0

The ASUS SDRW-08D2S-UProduct is an external optical drive that reads and writes CDs and DVDs through a USB 2.0 connection. It suits users who need occasional disc access on laptops or desktops without an internal bay. The compact black-and-white enclosure measures 0.8 by 5.6 by 6.2 inches and weighs 11.04 oz. It works with both Windows and macOS systems.

8x DVD and 24x CD performance

The drive writes DVD±R, DVD±RW and DVD-RAM at up to 8x and reads DVDs at the same speed. CDs can be read at 24x, written at 24x and rewritten at 16x. Double-layer media is supported for higher-capacity backups. Speeds drop when media quality or USB bus limits are reached, so very large jobs take longer than the peak rates suggest.

USB-powered convenience with software extras

A single USB 2.0 cable supplies both data and power, removing the need for a separate adapter. Included Disc Encryption software adds password protection and hidden-file features for sensitive archives. The Drag and Burn utility reduces disc creation to three steps. Systems without a free USB port or those requiring Blu-ray support will need a different solution.

Questions about this item

Will the USB 2.0 interface on this ASUS SDRW-08D2S-UProduct drive work with my older laptop that only has USB 1.1 ports?

Yes, the USB 2.0 host interface is backwards compatible with USB 1.1 ports, though data transfer will be limited to the slower 1.1 speeds.

How can I confirm the drive is writing DVDs at the rated 8x speed after I set it up?

Use burning software that displays the active write speed; it should report up to 8x for DVD±R media when using compatible discs.

Does the retail pack include a USB cable, or do I need to buy one separately?

The external drive connects via its built-in USB 2.0 interface; a standard USB cable is typically included in the retail pack for immediate use.
