Solar filter for 80 mm binoculars with OD 5.0 film and 85–126 mm clamp range
The Baader Planetarium AstroSolar Binocular Filter mounts on binoculars with an 80mm aperture to enable safe white-light solar viewing. Optical density 5.0 film reveals sunspots and surface detail while protecting the observer's eyes. It is intended for astronomers and hobbyists who want a ready-mounted filter rather than a DIY sheet. The stress-free cell preserves the film's diffraction-limited performance at high magnification.
The filter is a passive optical component with no electronics, so it generates no heat, produces no noise and draws no power during use. Image quality remains stable because the AstroSolar film is held without tension, avoiding the distortion that occurs when material is stretched like a drumhead. No active cooling or power supply is required for normal solar observation sessions.
The clamp fits binoculars with an outer diameter of 85-100mm and an inner diameter of 111-126mm, secured by the included centering bolts. Three safety straps with glue-pads add a secondary attachment to prevent accidental detachment while observing. Buyers whose binoculars fall outside these diameter ranges cannot use this filter, and those needing a filter for photographic equipment must choose a different model.

Loosen the cell, slide it over the objectives so the clamping range of 85-100mm or 111-126mm matches your barrels, tighten the centering bolts evenly, then attach the three safety straps with their glue-pads; the step most often missed is securing all three straps before observing.
The AstroSolar Safety Film OD 5.0 should be inspected before every session for punctures, creases or coating degradation; replace the entire filter cell if the film shows any damage, as the film cannot be serviced separately.
The optical density of 5.0 is rated for visual use only; prolonged imaging or extended high-magnification sessions can exceed the film's thermal capacity, so limit continuous viewing and allow the cell to cool between sessions.
