Open-world RPG with Steam activation

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a single-player role-playing game set in the province of Skyrim. Players assume the role of the Dragonborn, tasked with confronting returning dragons and a civil war. The game requires a free Steam account and an internet connection for activation and installation on PC.

Sustained play on modest hardware

Minimum specifications call for a dual-core 2 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM and a DirectX 9c compatible video card with 512 MB of memory. Recommended specifications increase this to a quad-core CPU, 4 GB of RAM and a DirectX 9 video card with 1 GB of memory such as a GTX 260 or Radeon 4890. The title runs on Windows XP, Vista or 7 and needs 6 GB of hard drive space.

Legacy DirectX 9 rendering pipeline

The engine targets DirectX 9c feature level, limiting shader complexity and modern API features. Visual fidelity scales with video memory from 512 MB to 1 GB on supported cards. The Steam distribution layer adds an online handshake at launch but does not alter the rendering path. Buyers who want a DirectX 11 or 12 native engine should look elsewhere.

Questions about this item

Will the DX9c 512 MB video card run hot and loud during long sessions?

The minimum spec calls for a DirectX 9c card with 512 MB VRAM, so most modern GPUs will handle the load at low fan speeds and modest temperatures.

Do I need a Steam account and internet connection before I can play?

Yes — activation requires a free Steam account and an internet connection; the disc or download alone will not launch the game.

Can I keep my GTX 260 or Radeon 4890 and still meet the recommended specs?

Those cards are listed as the baseline for recommended settings, so they will run the game at the intended quality level.
