Portable serial adapter for legacy equipment
This USB to RS232 adapter uses the FT232RL chipset to connect serial devices with a female DB9 port to a modern computer. It supports Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP, 2000, Linux 2.4.0 and later, and Mac OS8 or higher. The 12ft cable length provides flexibility for industrial or laboratory setups. It is not suited for users needing a male DB9 connector or a VGA interface.
USB-powered operation with no external supply
The adapter draws power directly from the USB 2.0 connection, eliminating the need for a bulky external power adapter. Plug-and-play convenience means the DB9 port appears as a standard COM port accessible by any compatible software. Normal use produces no fan noise and minimal heat because the device has no active cooling components. Power consumption stays low thanks to the FTDI chipset design.
Nine-wire pinout and driver support included
The cable implements a full 9-wire pinout covering DCD, RXD, TXD, DTR, GND, DSR, RTS, CTS and RI for broad device compatibility. Drivers must be downloaded from the official FT232 website before first use, after which the adapter works without additional software. The bundled user manual explains installation steps for each supported operating system. No extra cables or gender changers are included in the package.

Questions about this item
How do I install the 12ft USB to RS232 adapter and what step do people often miss?
Plug the USB end into the computer, connect the female DB9 port to your serial device, then download and install the FT232RL driver from the official FTDI website before first use; the adapter draws power from the USB port so no external supply is needed.
What maintenance or replacement will the 12ft USB to RS232 adapter need later?
The cable has no user-serviceable parts; keep the connectors clean and the cable free from sharp bends, and replace the unit only if the FT232RL chipset or DB9 pins become physically damaged.
What limit appears first on the 12ft USB to RS232 adapter during sustained use?
The USB 2.0 interface caps the maximum throughput, so sustained serial traffic will hit that bandwidth ceiling before the FT232RL chipset or the 12ft cable length becomes a bottleneck.
