USB to RS232 Adapter with PL2303 Chipset
This 6.6-foot cable converts a USB 2.0 port into a DB9 serial connection using the Prolific PL2303 chipset. It links legacy equipment such as modems, scanners, cashier registers and CNC controllers to modern computers. The adapter draws power from the USB bus, so no external supply is needed.
USB 2.0 Interface Limits Data Rate to 1 Mbps
The connection tops out at 1 Mbps, which is adequate for simple serial devices but too slow for high-throughput instruments. The cable is explicitly not compatible with cutting plotters or SCM hardware. Drivers must be downloaded from the supplier website before the adapter will function on any supported operating system.
Driver Installation Required Before First Use
Install the driver package on Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Linux or Mac OS before plugging the cable in; skipping this step is the most common reason the adapter appears dead. The gold-plated contacts and triple shielding resist corrosion and interference, but the DB9 gender and pinout must match the target device or communication will fail.

Questions about this item
Should I choose the 3.3 foot or 6.6 foot version of this USB to RS232 adapter?
The product is supplied as a single 6.6 foot cable; the 3.3 foot length mentioned in the package contents appears to be a typo.
What does the 1Mbps USB 2.0 data transfer rate mean when the adapter is connected to a serial device?
It sets the maximum throughput between the USB port and the PL2303 chipset, so actual RS232 speeds will be at or below 1Mbps depending on the attached equipment.
Which USB standard does the adapter use and what does it limit in practice?
The adapter uses USB 2.0, which caps the link at 1Mbps and supplies bus power so no external adapter is needed.
