Safe darkroom light for B&W processing

The Bolton Technical Darkroom Safe Light emits a 635nm red LED wavelength selected to minimise fogging on black-and-white film and print paper. It measures 75x75x135mm and weighs very little, making it easy to position on a bench or shelf. Power comes from a supplied Micro USB cable or from three AAA batteries not included in the box. Photographers who need a compact, wavelength-specific safelight for traditional darkroom work will find it fit for purpose.

Replaces makeshift red filters

Unlike coloured gels over white LEDs or wall-mounted safelights that require wiring, this unit is portable and runs from any USB power source. The jump is worth it when you process B&W material in temporary spaces or need to verify safe working distance before each session. It is not suited for colour paper or orthochromatic films that demand different spectral cut-offs, nor for users who require an integrated timer or intensity control.

Steady output during long developing sessions

The LED maintains a constant 635nm emission while powered by USB, avoiding the drift that can occur with battery drain over extended prints. Heat stays low in the plastic shell, so the lamp can run for the full duration of a typical developing cycle without warming the surrounding area. Remember to remove batteries before connecting USB power, and always confirm the safe distance for your specific paper and chemistry.

Questions about this item

What are the physical dimensions of the safe light for bench placement?

The unit measures 75 by 75 by 135 millimetres, or 2.95 by 2.95 by 5.3 inches, so it fits on a standard darkroom shelf.

How do I power the lamp correctly using the USB cable?

Connect the supplied Android USB cable to a Micro USB port, but remove any AAA batteries first to avoid damage.

When should I replace the batteries if I use them instead of USB power?

Replace the AAA batteries when the 635nm red LED output dims noticeably during a safe-distance test before processing.
