Industrial USB-to-serial adapter

This USB-to-RS422/RS485 converter cable uses an FTDI FT232 chipset to connect industrial serial equipment directly to a laptop or PC USB port. It targets engineers and technicians who need reliable half-duplex RS485 or full-duplex RS422 communication without internal expansion cards.

Surge and ESD protection

The adapter provides 600W surge protection and 15KV ESD isolation on signal pins to safeguard sensitive control equipment from electrical damage. Automatic I/O conversion circuitry handles direction control so no manual configuration is required for RS485 half-duplex operation.

Driver installation and conflicts

Windows 10, 8, 7, XP and macOS recognise the FTDI chipset for plug-and-play installation without an external power supply. The virtual COM port avoids IRQ, DMA and memory resource conflicts, though some legacy industrial software may need the COM port number manually reassigned in Device Manager.

Questions about this item

Will the FT232 chipset ever need replacement under normal use?

The FT232 chipset is a solid-state component with no moving parts and no user-serviceable elements, so it does not require scheduled replacement.

What protection limit activates first during a sustained voltage event?

The 600 W surge protection threshold is reached before the 15 KV ESD rating, so surge clamping engages first.

Does the adapter generate noticeable heat or fan noise when left running continuously?

The cable draws power only from the USB bus, has no fan, and runs cool enough for all-day industrial use without audible noise.
