The Tale of Despereaux PC Game

This Windows title follows the film's storyline, letting players guide Despereaux through castle corridors and Rat World. Sword combat, platforming sections and puzzles are voiced by Emma Watson, Robbie Coltrane and Tony Hale. The game targets younger players and families looking for a narrative-driven adventure.

Suits younger players

Buyers needing modern operating-system support should look elsewhere, as the software lists Windows XP and Vista as its platforms. The disc also requires an 8X DVD-ROM drive, so systems without an optical drive cannot install it.

Minimum graphics requirement: 128 MB VRAM

A video card such as a GeForce3 or ATI 7500 meeting that video-memory threshold is the deciding factor for whether the game will launch and display at 800 x 600 in 16-bit colour. Systems below that specification will not run the title.

Questions about this item

Will the DVD-ROM spin loudly or heat the PC when the game runs all day?

The game only requires an 8X DVD-ROM drive and modest system resources, so the drive spins at standard speed and the CPU load stays low enough that extra noise or heat is unlikely.

Which components must my computer already have to run The Tale of Despereaux?

You need Windows XP or Vista, a Pentium 4 1.2 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, 4 GB free hard-drive space, a GeForce3 or ATI 7500 with 128 MB VRAM, DirectX 9.0c, 800 x 600 16-bit display, 16-bit Sound Blaster compatible audio, plus a mouse and keyboard.

Can I keep my older GeForce3 or ATI 7500 graphics card and still play this game?

Yes — the minimum spec lists a GeForce3 or ATI 7500 with 128 MB VRAM, so those older cards meet the requirement and will run the game.
