A 9/32 inch jobber length drill bit with a 135 degree split point for accurate starting in metal
The Chicago-Latrobe 42618 is a fractional-inch drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in metal and wood. Its 9/32-inch diameter suits maintenance, fabrication and automotive tasks where a precise hole size is required. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and starts the cut cleanly without a centre punch. Tradespeople and DIY users will find it compatible with standard three-jaw chucks.
The bit is manufactured from high-speed steel and coated with titanium aluminium nitride for increased surface hardness and heat resistance. This combination allows higher cutting speeds and extends tool life when drilling steel, cast iron or non-ferrous alloys. The coating also reduces friction, which helps keep the cutting edges cooler during prolonged use. No coolant-through holes are present, so external lubrication is recommended for deep holes.
The jobber-length flute provides a balanced reach-to-rigidity ratio for hand-held and bench-mounted drilling. A straight shank ensures secure clamping in drill presses, cordless drills and impact drivers. The split-point geometry is self-centring, which improves accuracy on curved or angled surfaces. The bit is supplied new and ready for immediate use in workshop or site environments.

Insert the bit fully into the chuck jaws, then tighten securely so the split point runs true; the common mistake is leaving a gap that lets the bit walk at start-up.
The TiAlN coating resists wear, but the cutting edges will dull over time; resharpen the 135-degree split point or replace the bit when holes become oversize or rough.
Heat builds up in the non-coolant-through flute, so the bit loses hardness before the coating fails; clear chips often and pause to let the tool cool.
