A 1/2 in high-speed steel jobber drill bit with a 118° left-hand helix for reverse cutting
The Chicago-Latrobe 44432 is a jobber-length drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling tasks. Its left-hand helix makes it suitable for extracting broken fasteners or for use in reverse-rotation applications. The 1/2 inch fractional size provides a standard diameter for common workshop needs.
Manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, the bit offers standard wear resistance for metal and wood. The conventional 118-degree point angle centres easily without a pilot hole. The straight shank fits standard three-jaw chucks found on most handheld drills and drill presses.
The 118-degree point is optimised for mild steel and softer materials rather than hard alloys or stainless steel. Without coolant-through channels, deep holes require frequent withdrawal to clear chips and manage heat. The left-hand spiral cannot be used for standard right-hand threading operations.

The jobber-length bit has a straight shank that fits any standard three-jaw chuck accepting 1/2 in diameter, so the practical limit is a 1/2 in capacity chuck.
Jobber-length geometry on a 1/2 in bit typically runs about 6 in overall with roughly 4 in of flute, so plan for that depth plus workpiece thickness when setting up.
Chuck the bright-finish bit securely, then set the spindle to reverse (counter-clockwise) rotation; the most common mistake is leaving the machine in forward gear.
