A 7/16-inch left-hand high-speed steel drill bit with a 118-degree point for screw-machine work
The Chicago-Latrobe 48928 is a screw machine drill bit sized at 7/16 inch with a decimal equivalent of .4375. It features a 118 degree conventional point angle and a left hand cutting direction. Made from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, it is designed for non-coolant through applications. Machinists and maintenance technicians use it for precision drilling in screw machine operations.
This bit replaces a dull or broken left hand screw machine drill bit of the same 7/16 inch size and 118 degree point geometry. The upgrade is worth it when the existing tool no longer holds tolerance or produces poor hole quality in high speed steel workpieces. A fresh high speed steel bit restores cutting efficiency and reduces cycle time. It is not for right hand cutting requirements or coolant through tooling systems.
The bit installs directly into compatible screw machine collets or chucks that accept a 7/16 inch shank. No special adapters or torque settings are required beyond standard machine setup procedures. What usually goes wrong is inserting the bit into a right hand rotation spindle, which prevents cutting and damages the cutting edges. Operators must verify left hand spindle rotation before starting the cycle.

A chuck capacity of at least 7/16 in or 0.4375 in is needed to grip the shank securely.
Insert the shank fully, tighten the chuck firmly, and run the motor in reverse so the left-hand flutes cut correctly.
Resharpen the 118° point when cutting edges dull or chip; replace the bit if the shank wears or the flutes crack.
