A cobalt steel screw-machine drill bit with a 135-degree split point for precise right-hand cutting in hard metals
This Chicago-Latrobe screw machine drill bit is made from cobalt steel with 8% cobalt content (M42). It suits metalworkers and maintenance technicians who need a durable bit for drilling hard materials such as stainless steel and high-strength alloys. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and starts the cut cleanly. Right-hand cutting direction matches standard drill chucks and drivers.
The 135-degree point angle is optimised for harder metals and may wander on very soft or thin sheet material without a centre punch. Cobalt steel holds an edge longer than standard high-speed steel but is more brittle, so heavy side loads can cause chipping. The 7/32-inch diameter (decimal equivalent .2188) fixes the hole size; it cannot be adjusted for clearance or tap drill requirements. The split point helps self-centring but does not replace a rigid setup.
The bit installs in any standard three-jaw chuck or quick-change holder that accepts a straight shank. Ensure the chuck is tightened evenly on the flats to prevent slippage during high-torque drilling. The most frequent problem is premature dulling caused by excessive speed or insufficient coolant; run at lower RPM and use cutting fluid for best life. Overheating can also turn the straw/bronze surface colour blue, indicating lost temper.

The 7/32 inch diameter equals 0.2188 inch decimal equivalent. Pick this size when the hole must match that exact dimension; choose another diameter only if the drawing calls for a different hole size.
The 135 degree split point centres itself on contact, reduces thrust and prevents walking on hard materials such as stainless steel or cast iron.
M42 denotes 8 % cobalt in the high-speed steel, giving higher red hardness so the edge stays sharp longer at elevated drilling temperatures.
