A 57/64 inch high-speed steel drill bit with a 118-degree point and 1/2 inch reduced shank
The Chicago-Latrobe 52457 is a Silver & Deming drill bit with a 57/64 inch cutting diameter. It is designed for machinists and fabricators who need to enlarge existing holes or create large-diameter bores in metal. The 1/2 inch reduced shank allows use in standard drill chucks with limited capacity.
The 118 degree point angle provides a conventional cutting profile suited for general-purpose drilling in steel and other ferrous materials. Under sustained feed pressure, the high-speed steel body maintains hardness while the black oxide finish helps retain lubricant and resist chip welding during extended cuts.
The defining specification is the 1/2 inch reduced shank, which determines whether the bit fits the chuck of the intended drill press or handheld drill. Buyers whose equipment accepts only smaller shank diameters cannot use this bit without an adapter or a different tool.

The 118-degree point angle on this high-speed-steel bit is designed for general-purpose drilling; heat build-up depends on material, speed, feed and coolant use rather than a fixed thermal rating.
The 1/2 reduced shank fits any drill chuck that accepts a 1/2-inch shank, so a 1/2-inch or larger capacity chuck is required.
Black-oxide coating adds lubricity and corrosion resistance; wear rate depends on run-out, spindle condition and cutting parameters, not solely on the age of the press.
