A 1-inch high-speed steel drill bit with a 118-degree point and 1/2-inch reduced shank for large-hole drilling in standard chucks
The Chicago-Latrobe 55464 is a Silver & Deming drill bit designed for creating 1-inch holes in metal using a 1/2-inch chuck. It suits maintenance technicians and fabricators who need large-diameter capacity on standard drill presses or heavy-duty handheld drills.
Standard twist drills typically max out at 1/2-inch shank diameter, limiting hole size. This bit bridges the gap when you need a 1-inch bore but lack a taper-shank machine. The jump is worth it for occasional large-hole work where a dedicated mag drill is not justified.
The 1/2-inch reduced shank seats directly into a standard three-jaw chuck without adapters. Black oxide finish aids chip evacuation and reduces galling. The 118-degree point requires adequate feed pressure to start cleanly; light pressure on hard steel can cause walking or premature wear.
Made from high-speed steel with a black oxide finish, the bit resists heat buildup during extended cuts in mild steel and cast iron. The material choice balances toughness and wear resistance for general-purpose shop use where coolant may not be available.

The 1/2 inch reduced shank fits any standard drill chuck that accepts a 1/2 inch diameter shank.
Open the chuck fully, insert the shank completely, and tighten securely on the reduced shank section — not on the flutes — to prevent slippage.
Replace the bit when the 118 degree cutting edges become dull, chipped, or when drilling produces excessive heat and poor chip evacuation.
