Chicago-Latrobe 57840 drill set

This eight-piece set supplies reduced-shank drill bits for general-purpose metalworking. It suits maintenance technicians and fabricators who need a single shank diameter across multiple hole sizes.

118-degree point angle

The 118-degree point angle is the critical specification for chip formation in mild steel and aluminium. A steeper angle would wander on flat stock; a flatter angle would demand more thrust than a hand drill can deliver.

High-speed steel with black-oxide finish

The black-oxide coating reduces galling and holds lubricant during repetitive drilling. The set handles production runs in sheet metal and structural sections but lacks the cobalt content required for hardened alloys or stainless steel.

Questions about this item

What does the 118° point angle mean for drilling performance?

The 118° point angle is a general-purpose geometry that centres easily in steel and other metals, giving reliable starting and consistent chip evacuation in a hand drill or drill press.

What shank style does the 57840 set use and what chuck size is required?

Each bit has a reduced 1/2 inch shank so the full range fits a standard 1/2 inch drill chuck without needing a larger capacity chuck.

What are the physical dimensions of the bits in this 8-piece set?

The set contains eight high-speed steel bits with black oxide finish, each ground to a 118° point and fitted with a 1/2 inch reduced shank for use in 1/2 inch chucks.
