Cleveland Taper Shank Drill Bit 17/64
The Cleveland C12099 is a fractional-inch taper shank drill bit sized 17/64 inch with a decimal equivalent of .2656 inches. It is made from high speed steel and finished with steam oxide for general-purpose drilling in metal and wood. The 118 degree point angle suits standard bench and portable drills that accept taper shank tooling.
17/64 inch capacity and headroom
The 17/64 inch diameter handles holes for 1/4 inch fasteners and similar clearance work in mild steel, aluminium and hardwoods. High speed steel holds an edge in these materials but wears faster in stainless steel or hardened alloys where cobalt or carbide would last longer. The 118 degree point centres well but can wander on very hard surfaces without a pilot hole.
Steam oxide finish and taper shank mounting
The steam oxide surface reduces galling and helps retain cutting fluid during extended cuts. The Morse taper shank locks directly into a matching spindle or sleeve, giving positive drive without a chuck and allowing quick tool changes on drill presses and lathes. It will not fit standard three-jaw chucks unless a taper-to-straight adapter is used.

Questions about this item
Will the Morse taper on this C12099 bit seat properly in the spindle of my older drill press?
The bit uses a standard Morse taper shank that matches the internal taper of most drill-press spindles, so it should seat and eject cleanly in older machines that accept that taper size.
How can I verify the 118-degree point is cutting correctly after I install the bit?
A properly sharpened 118-degree point will start on centre without a centre punch, produce short, curled chips in steel, and leave a round hole measuring .2656 in. across the full depth.
Does the C12099 come with a drift key or sleeve, or do I need to buy one separately?
The box contains only the single high-speed steel drill bit with steam-oxide finish; a drift key or Morse-taper sleeve for removal is not included and must be purchased separately.
