Cobalt M42 Rectangular Tool Bit

This Cleveland tool bit is a rectangular blank made from Cobalt M42 high-speed steel. It measures 5/8 inch wide, 3/4 inch high and 5 inches long with a non-beveled profile. Machinists use it to grind custom lathe tools for turning operations.

Suited for custom tool grinding.

The blank suits machinists who grind their own cutting geometry for specific turning tasks. It is not a finished indexable insert, so operators who need pre-shaped, replaceable cutting edges should look at a different product type.

Cobalt M42 grade determines wear resistance

The Cobalt M42 material provides high hot hardness and abrasion resistance for demanding cutting conditions. This grade is the key specification that decides whether the blank matches the workpiece material and machining parameters.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the M42 cobalt grade or another grade for general lathe work?

The M42 cobalt grade (8 % cobalt) gives high red-hardness and wear resistance, making it suitable for cutting tough steels and high-temperature alloys on a lathe.

How does the 861 designation affect performance in a lathe?

The 861 designation identifies this specific rectangular blank geometry; it does not change the material properties but ensures the 5/8 in × 3/4 in × 5 in size fits standard tool holders.

What does the non-beveled rectangular shape mean for tool-post mounting?

The non-beveled rectangular cross-section provides full contact with the tool-post clamp, giving rigid support for heavy cuts without the bit rocking in the holder.
