Cleveland C54788 Straight Flute Hand Tap

The Cleveland C54788 is a straight flute hand tap designed for creating unified fine threads in metal workpieces. It suits machinists and maintenance technicians who need to cut or repair internal threads by hand or with a tapping head.

Thermals noise and power draw

As a manual cutting tool the tap generates no electrical power draw and produces no operating noise. Heat during use depends on the workpiece material cutting speed and lubrication rather than the tool itself.

Replaces worn or damaged taps

This tap replaces a worn or damaged 5/8"-18 UNF plug tap when thread quality degrades or the original tool is lost. The upgrade is worthwhile when the existing tap no longer holds the H3 limit or produces a clean 2B class of fit.

Questions about this item

How do you install the Cleveland C54788 tap and which step is often done incorrectly?

Drill a 14.50 mm hole, apply cutting fluid, then start the tap square to the workpiece; the common error is tilting the tap, which cuts crooked threads.

What maintenance or replacement will the Cleveland C54788 tap need later?

The uncoated high-speed steel dulls with use; resharpen or replace the tap once threads show tearing or require excessive torque.

What limit appears first when using the Cleveland C54788 tap continuously?

Heat buildup in the 1.81 in thread length softens the cutting edges, causing rapid wear before the 3.81 in overall length becomes a factor.
