Cuts 1-1/4"-11.5 NPT threads in pipe and conduit with a five-flute high-speed steel semi-bottoming design
The Cleveland C64044 is a high-speed steel pipe tap designed to cut 1-1/4"-11.5 NPT threads in pipe and conduit. Its semi-bottoming chamfer and five-flute geometry suit maintenance and fabrication tasks where a through-hole is not available. The bright uncoated finish is standard for general-purpose threading in ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
As a manual cutting tool, the tap generates negligible heat and noise during normal hand or machine tapping operations. No external power supply or pneumatic source is required to drive the tool itself. Cutting fluid applied by the operator manages temperature at the cutting edges and evacuates chips through the flutes.
The five-flute design distributes cutting load across more teeth for smoother thread entry and reduced chatter in tough materials. A bright finish avoids coating buildup that can affect fit in tight-tolerance NPT assemblies. The specification lists a 75 percent thread drill size of 1.4844 inches to help the user select the correct tap drill for the application.

Drill a 1.4844 in hole to the 75 percent thread depth, then run the tap straight with cutting fluid so the 5 flutes cut clean NPT threads without wandering.
Replace it when the 5 flutes show rounded crests or the semi-bottoming chamfer requires excessive torque to start a 1-1/4"-11.5 NPT thread in high-speed steel.
Chip packing in the 5 flutes builds heat fastest, dulling the high-speed steel cutting edges before the semi-bottoming chamfer reaches full thread depth.
