Cleveland C96123 Spiral Point Tap 1/2-20 UNF Cobalt 3 Flutes

SKU CH-10SG-00BF0

Creates UNF 1/2-20 threads in through-holes using cobalt steel with three flutes and black oxide finish

  • Cobalt construction resists wear during high-speed tapping
  • Spiral-point design pushes chips ahead for cleaner threads
  • 3-flute geometry balances strength and chip clearance
  • 1/2-20 UNF sizing matches standard fine-thread applications
  • Class 2B fit ensures reliable assembly tolerance

Cleveland C96123 Spiral Point Tap 1/2-20 UNF Cobalt

This Cleveland spiral point tap cuts unified national fine threads at 1/2-20 UNF for through-hole applications. The cobalt construction with black oxide finish suits metalworking shops and maintenance technicians who need reliable thread production in tougher alloys.

Installation notes and common issues

The plug chamfer and spiral point push chips ahead of the tap, making it easier to start in through holes. Using the correct 11.40 mm drill for the 75 percent thread depth prevents oversize threads, while proper lubrication reduces the risk of tap breakage in deep holes.

Limits of the UNF interface

The 2B class of fit provides a standard tolerance window that may not suit high-precision assemblies requiring tighter fits. The fixed 1 17/32 in thread length and 4 21/64 in overall length restrict use to holes that accommodate these dimensions.

Questions about this item

How can I verify the tap is cutting a correct 1/2-20 UNF thread after setup?

Check that the finished thread matches the 2B class of fit and that the 11.40 mm drill size was used for the 75 percent thread depth.

What comes with the C96123 tap and what must be purchased separately?

The box contains the single spiral point tap; a 11.40 mm drill bit, cutting fluid and a tap wrench are not included.

Which version of this tap should I choose for a standard UNF hole?

The C96123 is a 1/2-20 UNF plug tap with three flutes, cobalt construction and black oxide finish — select it when those exact specifications match the job.
