A 12-inch high-speed steel extension drill with a 1/16-inch split point for deep, precise holes
The Cleveland C13176 is a 1/16-inch high-speed steel extension drill designed for deep-hole drilling in aircraft maintenance and precision machining. Its 12-inch overall length reaches areas standard bits cannot, while the 135-degree split point reduces walking and ensures accurate starts in tough alloys. Machinists and technicians gain a specialised tool for high-performance fractional-inch work.
High-speed steel construction maintains hardness at the elevated temperatures generated during extended drilling cycles at 4xD depth. The bright, uncoated finish allows operators to apply cutting fluid directly for effective heat dissipation and chip evacuation. Consistent flute geometry supports stable cutting action, minimising vibration that can degrade hole quality or damage the workpiece.
This bit replaces shorter jobber drills when access exceeds their reach, such as drilling through wing spars, deep cavities or stacked components. The jump is justified when a 1/16-inch hole must be drilled to a 1/4-inch depth in confined spaces where standard lengths bottom out. It is not suited for production runs requiring coated-tool life or diameters outside the 1/16-inch fractional size.

Insert the shank fully into the chuck jaws and tighten securely; the common mistake is not seating the bit deep enough, which causes wobble on the 12-inch length.
The bright uncoated HSS cutting edges will dull over time; resharpen the 135-degree split point to the original 21-to-34-degree relief angles or replace the bit when drilling performance drops.
The 1/4-inch maximum drilling depth per pass (4xD for the 1/16-inch diameter) is reached quickly, requiring frequent peck cycles to clear chips and prevent overheating.
