Cleveland Taper Shank Drill Bit 1/8 in

The Cleveland C12040 is a taper shank drill bit sized at 1/8 in with a 118 degree conventional point. It is manufactured from high speed steel and finished with a black oxide coating. This accessory suits machinists and maintenance technicians who need a replaceable cutting tool for general purpose drilling in metal.

High speed steel with black oxide finish

The high speed steel construction provides hardness and heat resistance for extended cutting life in ferrous and non ferrous materials. The black oxide finish adds lubricity and helps reduce chip welding during operation. Users requiring coolant fed or carbide tipped tooling for high volume production will need a different specification.

Questions about this item

When will the 118° point on this drill bit need resharpening or replacement?

The 118° conventional point is made from high-speed steel with a black oxide finish; resharpen it on a bench grinder when cutting edges dull or chip, restoring the original angle each time.

What limits continuous drilling with this taper-shank bit before it must cool?

Heat buildup in the high-speed steel body is the first limit; pause to let the bit cool when the black oxide surface discolours or cutting slows noticeably.
