Compact Bluetooth 4.0 adapter for legacy Windows PCs

This Costech USB dongle adds Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity to desktops and laptops running Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista or XP in both 32-bit and 64-bit editions. The gold-plated micro form factor plugs into any USB port and stays safely inserted during travel. Backward compatibility covers Bluetooth 3.0, 2.1, 2.0 and 1.0 devices, while A2DP support enables stereo audio streaming to headsets and speakers at up to 3 Mbps.

Suitable for adding basic Bluetooth to older

The adapter works with Microsoft built-in drivers on Windows 8 and later, and includes a driver disc for Windows 7 and earlier. It pairs with keyboards, mice, phones, headsets and speakers within a 33ft/10m range. Buyers who need Bluetooth Low Energy peripherals, mesh networking or audio codecs beyond standard A2DP will not find those features here.

Deciding specification: Bluetooth 4.0 class 2

The single figure that determines fit is the Bluetooth 4.0 class 2 implementation delivering up to 33ft/10m line-of-sight range and 3 Mbps EDR throughput. If your headphones, speaker or phone requires a newer Bluetooth version or longer reach, this adapter will not meet the requirement.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the Bluetooth 4.0 version or the upgraded 2-in-1 Bluetooth V5.0 transmitter mode mentioned in the features?

The product is a Bluetooth 4.0 USB adapter. The description of a 2-in-1 Bluetooth V5.0 transmitter mode appears in the feature list, but the core specification and manufacturer highlights identify this model as Bluetooth 4.0.

What does the 3 Mbps speed figure mean when I use this adapter with a headset or speaker?

The 3 Mbps figure is the maximum Enhanced Data Rate for the Bluetooth 4.0 link. Real-world audio streaming uses A2DP stereo playback within that bandwidth, so music and voice will stream at the quality the connected headset or speaker supports.

The adapter uses a USB interface — which Bluetooth standard does it implement and what does that cap in practice?

It implements Bluetooth 4.0 and is backward compatible with Bluetooth 3.0, 2.1, 2.0 and 1.0. The practical cap is the 3 Mbps EDR throughput and a 33ft/10m Class 2 range for data exchange and audio streaming.
