Eight 2.5G ports for multi-gig networks

The D-Link DMS108 is an eight-port unmanaged switch delivering 2.5 Gbps per RJ45 port. It targets gamers, home offices and small businesses that need a simple, fanless upgrade to multi-gig bandwidth without configuration. The metal desktop chassis runs silently and supports plug-and-play deployment.

Standards limit cabling and distance

Ports auto-negotiate at 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps or 2.5 Gbps and comply with IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, 802.3ab and 802.3bz. Flow control follows 802.3x and QoS uses 802.1p. Energy-Efficient Ethernet to 802.3az reduces idle power. Maximum segment length remains the 100 metre limit of twisted-pair copper, so longer runs need fibre or additional switches.

40 Gbps switching capacity with 4K MAC table

The non-blocking fabric handles 40 Gbps total throughput, enough for multiple 2.5G NAS units, Wi-Fi 6 access points and gaming PCs simultaneously. The 4K MAC address table covers typical SOHO device counts. Networks that exceed 4K entries or require managed features such as VLANs, link aggregation or remote monitoring will need a managed switch instead.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 8-port model or a different port count?

The DMS108 provides eight 2.5G RJ45 ports, giving you 40Gbps total switching capacity. If you need more than eight wired connections, you would need a larger switch; if you need fewer, this model still runs fanless and silent with unused ports.

What does the 40Gbps switching capacity mean for my actual network?

It means the internal fabric can handle full 2.5Gbps line-rate traffic on all eight ports simultaneously without blocking, so multiple 2.5G NAS units, Wi-Fi 6 access points or gaming PCs can transfer data at full speed at the same time.

Which Ethernet standard do the ports use and what speed does it cap at?

Each port follows IEEE 802.3bz 2.5GBASE-T and auto-negotiates down to 1Gbps or 100Mbps, so the practical ceiling per port is 2.5Gbps when connected with Cat5e or better cabling.
