  • QoS prioritises important traffic for smoother performance

16-port Fast Ethernet switch

The D-Link DSS-16+ is a 16-port unmanaged switch built for small offices and home networks needing wired connectivity. It delivers sixteen RJ45 ports operating at 10/100 Mbps with a fanless metal housing for silent operation. The unit supports desktop or rackmount placement to suit different environments. It requires no configuration for immediate deployment.

10/100 Mbps port speed

Every port negotiates at 10 or 100 Mbps using IEEE 802.3 and 802.3u standards with auto-negotiation and flow control. The switch forwards frames via store-and-forward switching with an 8K MAC address table and 160 KB buffer memory. Full-duplex connections can reach 200 Mbps per port. There are no uplink ports, Gigabit interfaces or VLAN support.

SOHO workgroup capacity

The sixteen ports comfortably connect workstations, printers and servers in a small office workgroup. QoS prioritisation helps maintain voice or video traffic quality during busy periods. Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power draw during idle periods. The switch runs out of headroom when aggregate throughput exceeds the 100 Mbps per-port limit or when managed features like VLANs, SNMP or link aggregation are required.

Questions about this item

What does 200 Mbps per port in full-duplex mean for daily use?

Each port can send and receive at 100 Mbps simultaneously, so file copies between two PCs on the switch can reach 200 Mbps combined throughput.

How does IEEE 802.3x flow control affect traffic on this switch?

The switch honours pause frames from connected devices, preventing packet loss when a receiver’s buffer fills up.

What mounting options does the metal housing provide?

The fanless metal case includes brackets for rack mounting and rubber feet for desktop use.
