Dell 146GB 10K SAS Internal Drive

This is a new 2.5-inch internal hard drive with a 146GB capacity and a 10000RPM spindle speed. It uses a SAS 6Gb/s interface and includes a 16MB cache buffer. The drive ships with a compatible PowerEdge server caddy for direct installation.

Suits PowerEdge servers listed in the specifications

The drive fits PowerEdge models 1900, 1950, 1955, 2900, 2950, 2970, 6900, 6950, R805, R900 and R905. Buyers who need more storage space or a different physical connector should consider other drives. Systems without a SAS backplane or caddy support cannot use this unit.

SAS 6Gb/s interface determines compatibility

The 6Gb/s SAS connection is the single specification that decides whether this drive works in a given server. Verify that the target system provides a matching SAS port and the correct 2.5-inch bay before purchase.

Questions about this item

Will the included caddy fit a standard 2.5in SAS bay in a PowerEdge 1950?

The drive ships with a PowerEdge server caddy that matches the 2.5in form factor and SAS 6Gb/s connector used in the 1950 and other listed models.

What is the correct orientation when sliding the caddy into a PowerEdge 2950 chassis?

Insert the caddy label-side up until the latch clicks; the SAS data and power contacts engage automatically — forcing it upside-down bends the connector pins.

Which component typically wears out first on a 10000RPM SAS drive with 16MB cache?

The spindle motor bearings are the usual wear point; monitor SMART reallocated-sector counts and plan replacement when they rise steadily.
