Dell 1DKVF 146GB 15K SAS Drive

This Dell 1DKVF is a 146GB 3.5-inch SAS hard drive spinning at 15000 RPM with a 3Gb/s transfer rate. It ships new with a hot-swap tray for direct installation into compatible Dell PowerEdge, PowerVault and Precision Workstation systems. The 16MB buffer supports sustained throughput for enterprise workloads.

Suited for and not suited

This drive suits administrators replacing a failed 146GB 15K SAS unit in a supported Dell server or workstation chassis. It also fits capacity-constrained arrays that specifically require the 3Gb/s SAS interface and hot-swap form factor. Buyers needing larger capacity, a faster interface or a different form factor should look elsewhere.

Deciding specification

The 3Gb/s SAS interface is the single specification that decides compatibility. Your backplane or controller must support 3Gb/s SAS signalling and accept a 3.5-inch hot-swap tray; otherwise the drive will not function in the target system.

Questions about this item

Does the 1DKVF ship with the hot-swap tray or must I order it separately?

The drive includes the hot-swap tray so it can be inserted directly into a compatible bay.

Should I pick the 146 GB 15K SAS model or a larger capacity for my PowerEdge server?

Choose the 146 GB 15K SAS drive when you need the fastest rotational speed for transaction-heavy workloads; larger capacities typically run at lower RPM.

What does the 3 Gb/s SAS transfer rate mean once the 1DKVF is installed in a real machine?

The 3 Gb/s SAS link caps the interface bandwidth; actual throughput will be limited by the drive's 15 000 RPM mechanics and 16 MB buffer.
