What the drive is

This is a 2.4TB SAS 2.5" 10K 12G internal hard drive supplied new with a compatible Dell caddy. It is built for Dell PowerEdge servers that accept 2.5-inch SAS drives. The 10K rotational speed and 12G SAS interface suit transactional workloads and mixed-use storage arrays.

Who it suits and who it does not

It fits the R240, R340, R360, R440, R540, R640, R6415, R740, R740XD, R740XD2, R7415, R7425, R840, R940, R940XA, R250, R350, R450, R550, R650, R650XS, R6515, R6525, R750, R750XA, R750XS, R7515, R7525, R660, R660XS, R6615, R6625, R760, R760XA, R760XD2, R760XS, R7615, R7625, R860 and R960. Buyers needing a different drive height, a different interface or a larger capacity should look elsewhere.

The deciding specification

The 12G SAS interface is the single specification that decides compatibility. The server backplane and controller must support 12G SAS signalling for the drive to operate at its rated speed.

Questions about this item

How much usable space does the 2.4TB capacity deliver in a RAID array?

The 2.4TB capacity provides the full raw addressable space; usable capacity depends on the RAID level chosen in the controller.

What does the 12G SAS interface limit in real-world throughput?

The 12G SAS link caps the drive at 12 Gbit/s, so sustained transfers cannot exceed that bus ceiling.

Will the included caddy fit a PowerEdge R740 front bay?

Yes, the compatible caddy is listed for the R740 among many other PowerEdge models.
