Dell 342-0857 600 GB SAS Drive

This Dell 342-0857 is a 600 GB internal hard drive with a 2.5 inch form factor and a 10000 RPM spindle speed. It uses a 6Gb/s SAS interface and supports hot-plug installation. The drive is supplied new and intended for desktop or server storage arrays. ||

Who This Suits

This drive suits administrators expanding a SAS-based storage array that accepts 2.5 inch hot-plug trays. It is not for systems that lack a SAS backplane or controller, nor for builds requiring a different capacity or physical height. Buyers needing a non-hot-plug device or a different interface should look elsewhere. ||

Deciding Specification

The 6Gb/s SAS interface is the single specification that determines compatibility. The host must provide a SAS connection and support 2.5 inch hot-plug drives for this unit to function.

Questions about this item

What controller or backplane do I need to run this 6Gb/s SAS drive?

You need a SAS controller or backplane that supports the 6Gb/s SAS interface standard used by this drive.

Will this 2.5" 10000 RPM SAS drive work in a server that currently uses 3Gb/s SAS drives?

Yes, the 6Gb/s SAS interface is backward compatible with 3Gb/s SAS backplanes and controllers, so it will operate at the lower speed.

How can I confirm the drive is recognised and running at 10000 RPM after installation?

Check the system BIOS or RAID controller utility; it will list the drive by its 600 GB capacity and report the 10000 RPM spindle speed.
