A standard 3.5 inch internal hard drive with a silver metal casing and exposed circuit board on the underside

DELL

DELL 400-AUXC 8 TB 3.5" 7200 RPM 512e SAS internal hard drive

SKU CH-M7S0-ZE1ES

8 TB 3.5" internal hard drive with 7200 RPM spindle speed and 12 Gb/s SAS interface for hot-plug storage expansion

  • 8 TB capacity stores large data volumes
  • 7,200 RPM spindle speed enables fast disk access
  • 12Gb/s SAS interface delivers high transfer rates
  • 5" hot-pluggable form factor fits standard drive bays
  • 512e disk format supports advanced storage configurations

Capacity and interface

The Dell 400-AUXC provides 8 TB of storage in a 3.5-inch internal form factor. It uses a Near Line SAS connection running at 12 Gb/s and a 512e disk format. The drive is built for hot-plug and hot-swap installation in compatible bays.

Sustained workload behaviour

A spindle speed of 7200 RPM supports consistent throughput for nearline access patterns. The SAS interface maintains bandwidth during extended sequential reads and writes. This combination suits workloads that demand steady data rates rather than short bursts.

Thermals, noise and power

The 3.5-inch mechanical design produces audible seek noise and vibration under load. Power draw scales with the 7200 RPM rotation and SAS signalling activity. Adequate chassis airflow is required to keep the drive within its operating temperature range.

Questions about this item

How much heat and noise does the 7200 RPM 3.5" Near Line SAS drive produce when running continuously?

The drive spins at 7200 RPM and is designed for near-line workloads; heat and acoustic output are within typical 3.5" enterprise drive limits for server chassis cooling.

What host interface and controller does the 12Gb/s SAS drive require to operate?

It needs a SAS backplane or HBA that supports 12Gb/s SAS signalling and the 512e sector format.

Will the 8 TB 512e Near Line SAS drive work in an older 6Gb/s SAS enclosure I already own?

Yes, the 12Gb/s SAS interface is backward compatible with 6Gb/s and 3Gb/s SAS controllers and backplanes.
