  • Supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 levels

DELL PERC H730 RAID Controller

The DELL PERC H730 is a 12Gb/s SAS and 6Gb/s SATA RAID controller built on a PCI Express 3.0 x8 host interface. It carries 1 GB of NV cache memory and supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 for enterprise storage arrays.

Dual-channel PCIe 3.0 x8 integration

The plug-in card form factor measures 2.5 inches in height and 7 inches in depth, fitting a standard low-profile slot. Eight internal SAS ports connect through two SFF-8643 connectors, linking directly to backplanes or drive cages without extra cabling.

Replaces older 6Gb/s SAS RAID cards

Upgrading from a 6Gb/s generation doubles the SAS link speed to 12Gb/s while retaining SATA 600 compatibility. The jump is worth it when drive throughput or array rebuild times become a bottleneck for database or virtualisation workloads.

Questions about this item

How many 12 Gb/s SAS drives can the H730 controller connect through its two SFF-8643 ports?

The card provides eight internal SAS lanes across two SFF-8643 connectors, so up to eight 12 Gb/s SAS or 6 Gb/s SATA drives can be attached.

Does the H730 need active cooling when it runs continuously in a server chassis?

The controller is a standard-height plug-in card without an onboard fan; it relies on the system's front-to-back airflow for cooling during sustained operation.

Which slot type and generation does the H730 require on the motherboard?

It installs in a PCI Express 3.0 x8 slot, so the host board must provide at least an x8 electrical link at Gen 3 speed.
