The Dell PowerConnect 2848 is a rackmount managed switch with forty-eight RJ45 Gigabit ports and four SFP uplinks. It supports IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, 802.3ab, 802.1Q, 802.3ad and 802.1p standards for VLANs, link aggregation and traffic prioritisation. An 8K MAC address table and 2MB buffer handle sustained traffic loads. SNMP support enables centralised monitoring and configuration.

Upgrade From Unmanaged Edge

This unit replaces an unmanaged desktop switch when VLAN segmentation, port mirroring or link aggregation become necessary. The jump is worth it when broadcast domains must be isolated, when uplink redundancy through LACP is required, or when SNMP-based monitoring tools need per-port visibility. Jumbo frame support up to 9000 bytes improves throughput for storage or backup traffic.

Suits Rack Deployments Needing Density

The 1U form factor fits standard racks and includes mounting hardware. It suits small-to-mid networks that need managed features without Layer 3 routing. Buyers who require PoE power for phones or cameras, or who need 10 Gigabit uplinks, should look at a different model. Environments demanding redundant power supplies or stacking will also need another platform.
