  • Dell X710 controller drives all four RJ-45 ports
  • Part number 540-BBVP identifies the genuine Dell adapter

Dell X710 10GbE 4-port adapter

This Dell X710 network card adds four 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports to a server through a PCI Express 3.0 x8 slot. It uses twisted-pair cabling with standard RJ-45 connectors for 10GBase-T connectivity. The plug-in form factor fits compatible server chassis.

Suited for servers needing dense 10GbE links

IT teams expanding server connectivity for storage, virtualisation or high-throughput workloads will find the four-port density useful. Buyers who need fibre-based SFP+ ports or a single-port solution should look at other models. Workstations without an available x8 slot cannot use this card.

Four 10GBase-T ports via x8 interface

The card delivers four independent 10 Gb/s links over copper twisted pair, providing up to 40 Gb/s aggregate bandwidth when all ports are saturated. The PCI Express 3.0 x8 host interface supplies sufficient throughput for line-rate traffic on all ports. Performance drops if the slot negotiates to a lower width or generation.

Questions about this item

What PCIe slot generation and width does the X710 card need on my server motherboard?

The card requires a PCI Express 3.0 x8 slot to operate at full 10GbE speed across all four ports.

Will the four RJ-45 ports on this card negotiate down to 1GbE for my existing Cat5e patch cables?

Yes, the 10GBase-T ports auto-negotiate and will link at 1GbE over Cat5e, though you need Cat6a or better for 10GbE.

How can I confirm all four 10GbE links are active after installing the card?

Check the link LEDs on each RJ-45 port; solid or blinking green indicates an established 10GBase-T or negotiated connection.
