Dell 55H49 3 TB SAS hard drive

The Dell 55H49 is a 3.5-inch internal hard drive offering 3 TB of storage. It connects through a SAS interface running at 6 Gbps and spins at 7200 RPM. The drive is supplied new and has been tested for reliable operation in desktop systems.

Suits SAS-equipped desktops and servers.

This drive fits desktop workstations or servers that provide a SAS backplane or controller. Buyers whose systems only have SATA ports should look elsewhere because the drive requires a SAS connection. It also does not suit 2.5-inch drive bays or external enclosures lacking SAS support.

SAS 6 Gbps interface decides compatibility

The single specification that determines fit is the SAS 6 Gbps interface. Your motherboard or controller must support this exact protocol; a standard SATA port will not work with this drive. Verify the interface before purchase to avoid installation issues.

Questions about this item

Do I need a SAS controller or HBA that supports 6 Gbps to use the 55H49 3 TB drive?

Yes, the 55H49 requires a SAS controller or HBA with a 6 Gbps SAS port; it will not work on a standard SATA-only motherboard header.

Can the 55H49 share the same SAS backplane or controller as my existing 3 Gbps SAS drives?

The 55H49 is compatible with 3 Gbps SAS backplanes and controllers, but it will negotiate down to the slower 3 Gbps link speed.

How can I verify the 55H49 is running at its rated 7200 RPM and 6 Gbps after installation?

Check the negotiated link speed and rotation rate in your RAID controller BIOS, HBA utility, or SMART data; both should report 6 Gbps and 7200 RPM.
