6 TB SAS 3.5" drive for Dell servers

This 6 TB SAS hard drive spins at 7.2K RPM and connects through a 12 Gbps interface. It is built for Dell PowerEdge servers that accept 3.5 inch SAS drives. The drive suits administrators who need bulk capacity for archives, backups or secondary storage arrays.

Includes compatible Dell caddy for direct mounting

A Dell caddy ships with the drive so it slides straight into supported PowerEdge bays without extra hardware. The tray matches the mounting points of the R210, R220, R230, R310, R320, R330, R410, R415, R420, R430, R510, R520, R530, R530XD, R630, R710, R715, R720, R720XD, R730XD, R730, R900, R905, R920 and R930 lines. Builders using non-Dell chassis or 2.5 inch bays cannot use this kit.

7.2K spindle balances heat and power

At 7.2K RPM the drive generates moderate heat and steady acoustic output typical of nearline SAS spindles. Power draw stays within the limits of a standard 12 Gbps backplane, so no special cooling or upgraded power supply is required for normal operation. The drive is not intended for high-IOPS transactional workloads that demand 10K or 15K speeds.

Questions about this item

What does the 12G SAS interface limit in real use?

The 12G SAS link caps the drive at its native 7.2K RPM throughput, so sustained transfers top out around the mechanical ceiling rather than the bus ceiling.

Which Dell servers accept the supplied 3.5" caddy?

The caddy fits R210 Gen I and II, R220, R230, R300, R310, R320, R330, R410, R415, R420, R430, R510, R520, R530, R530XD, R630, R710, R715, R720, R720XD, R730, R730XD, R900, R905, R920 and R930.

What step is often missed when installing the drive into the caddy?

People forget to seat the four side screws flush before sliding the caddy into the bay, leaving the drive loose and causing vibration errors.
