Capacity and interface

This Dell 825MC is a 1.8 TB internal hard drive with a SAS 6 Gb/s interface. It spins at 10 000 RPM in a 2.5 inch form factor. The drive is supplied new in OEM or retail packaging.

Suited for high-IOPS servers, not for desktops

The 10 000 RPM spindle and SAS interface suit transaction-heavy workloads such as databases or virtualisation hosts. Desktop boards and most laptops lack SAS controllers, so this drive will not work in those systems. Buyers who need a simple plug-and-play SATA drive should look elsewhere.

SAS 6 Gb/s interface decides compatibility

A backplane or controller with SAS 6 Gb/s ports is required for the drive to function. SATA-only ports cannot communicate with this device. Verify your host adapter supports SAS before purchasing.

Questions about this item

What host interface does my system need to connect this 825MC 1.8TB drive?

The drive uses a SAS 6Gb/s interface, so your controller or backplane must provide a SAS port that supports that link speed.

Will this 2.5" SAS drive fit in the same drive bays as my existing 2.5" SATA drives?

Yes, the physical 2.5" form factor matches standard 2.5" bays, but the bay and backplane must accept SAS signalling, not only SATA.

How can I verify the drive spins at its rated 10000 RPM after installation?

Check the drive's reported rotational speed in your RAID controller BIOS, operating system disk utilities, or SMART data; it should show 10000 RPM.
