Dell 89D42 1.2TB 10K SAS Drive

This Dell 89D42 089D42 is a 1.2TB internal hard drive spinning at 10000 RPM. It uses a SAS 12Gb/s interface and a 2.5 in form factor. The unit includes 128MB of cache and ships with an R Series tray for installation.

Suited for 12Gb/s SAS bays needing 10K speed

This drive fits servers or workstations that require a 2.5 in SAS device running at 10000 RPM with a 12Gb/s link. It is not for systems that only support 3.5 in drive bays. Buyers needing a larger capacity than 1.2TB should look at other options.

SAS 12Gb/s interface decides compatibility

The single specification that determines fit is the SAS 12Gb/s interface. The host controller or backplane must support this exact protocol and speed. Without a matching SAS 12Gb/s connection the drive will not function.

Questions about this item

Will the 12Gb/s SAS drive work in a server that only has 6Gb/s SAS backplanes?

Yes, the drive negotiates down to 6Gb/s automatically, so it will operate in older 6Gb/s SAS enclosures at the lower link speed.

How can I confirm the drive is running at its rated 10000 RPM after installation?

Check the drive's reported rotational speed in the RAID controller BIOS or SMART data; it should show 10000 RPM.

Does the R-series tray stay with the drive or do I need a separate caddy for my Dell PowerEdge bay?

The R-series tray shown in the supplier title is included, so no additional caddy is required for compatible Dell bays.
