DELL 91K8T 3 TB SAS drive

The DELL 91K8T is a 3 TB 3.5 inch SAS hard drive spinning at 7200 RPM. It ships with a hot-plug tray designed for Dell PowerEdge servers. The drive is new and carries the manufacturer part number 91K8T.

6 Gb/s SAS interface limit

The drive uses a 6 Gb/s SAS connection, which caps sustained throughput at the interface ceiling. Real-world speeds will sit below that maximum depending on workload and controller. The 7.2K RPM spindle sets the latency floor for random access patterns.

3 TB capacity for nearline storage

Three terabytes provides room for bulk data, backups and archival workloads on compatible PowerEdge models such as the R310, R410, R510, R710, T310, T410 and T610. The drive is not suited for high-IOPS databases or latency-sensitive primary storage.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 3 TB 7.2K RPM SAS drive or a different capacity for my PowerEdge server?

This 3 TB model with part number 91K8T is the only capacity listed; it fits the R310, R320, R410, R415, R420, R510, R515, R520, R610, R620, R710, R720, R720xd, T310, T320, T410, T420, T610, T620 and T710 servers and ships with the required hot-plug tray.

What does the 7.2K RPM rating mean once the drive is installed in a server?

The platters spin at 7200 revolutions per minute, delivering the throughput and latency typical of nearline SAS storage for bulk data workloads in the compatible PowerEdge systems.

How does the 6 Gb/s SAS interface cap real-world performance?

The SAS link tops out at 6 gigabits per second, so sustained transfers cannot exceed that bandwidth even if the drive mechanics could go faster.
