Capacity and interface

This Dell Constellation ES.2 drive delivers 3TB of storage on a 3.5in SAS 6Gb/s interface spinning at 7200RPM with a 64MB cache. It is supplied in a lot of 20 units, each including a PowerEdge server caddy tray for direct installation.

Suitable buyers and mismatched needs

The package suits administrators refreshing or expanding storage arrays in the listed PowerEdge models from the R310 through R720xd and T310 through T710 ranges. Buyers who need fewer than 20 drives, a different form factor, or a non-SAS interface should look elsewhere.

Deciding specification

The SAS 6Gb/s interface is the single specification that determines whether this drive will connect to your controller and backplane; verify that your system supports this interface before purchasing.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 3.5 SAS drive with the included PowerEdge caddy?

Slide the drive into the supplied caddy, secure it with the screws provided, then insert the assembly into a hot-swap bay of a compatible PowerEdge server such as the R310, R420 or T620 until it clicks.

What maintenance or replacement will the ST33000650SS need later?

As a mechanical 7200RPM drive it will eventually wear; plan to replace it after the rated workload limit or if SMART reallocated-sector counts rise, and keep firmware current via the server’s lifecycle controller.

What limit appears first under sustained write loads on this 64MB-cache SAS drive?

The 6Gb/s SAS interface and 7200RPM spindle cap sequential throughput around the interface ceiling, so sustained writes will hit that bandwidth limit before the cache fills.
