Dell AL14SEB120N 1.2TB 10K RPM SAS Drive

This enterprise-class internal hard drive delivers 1.2TB of storage with a 10,000 RPM spindle speed. It uses a 2.5-inch SAS interface running at 12Gb/s and includes a 128MB cache buffer. The drives are supplied new with PowerEdge Gen13 server caddies included for direct installation.

SAS 12Gb/s Interface Practical Limits

The SAS 12Gb/s interface provides a maximum theoretical bandwidth of 12Gb/s per port. Actual sustained transfer rates depend on the drive's mechanical speed and the host controller capabilities. Cable length and backplane design also affect signal integrity at this signalling rate. Compatibility is limited to systems with 12Gb/s SAS controllers or backplanes.

10K RPM Rotational Speed Decides Fit

The 10,000 RPM spindle speed determines the drive's random I/O performance and latency profile. This speed suits transactional workloads and databases requiring fast access times. It is not suited for archive storage where capacity per watt is the priority. Buyers needing higher sequential throughput or lower power draw should consider alternative drive classes.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the single drive or the lot of 10 for my server?

The listing is a lot of 10 drives, each 1.2 TB, so you receive ten identical units with trays included.

What does 10000 RPM mean for daily database workloads?

The 10000 RPM spindle and 128 MB cache deliver low latency for random I/O typical of transactional databases.

Will the 12 Gb/s SAS link run at full speed in a PowerEdge R730?

Yes, the R730 backplane supports 12 Gb/s SAS, so the drive operates at its rated interface speed.
