Dell FW688 SATA Optical Drive

The Dell FW688 is an 8X SATA internal DVD-ROM drive built for OptiPlex GX520 and GX620 systems. It reads DVD and CD media through a standard SATA interface. This module suits IT teams maintaining legacy desktops that still require optical media access.

SATA Integration for Legacy Desktops

The drive connects directly to a free SATA port and fits the 5.25-inch bay of the supported OptiPlex chassis. It requires no additional controller cards or proprietary cabling. Systems without an available SATA header or front drive bay cannot use this unit. Builders needing DVD writing capability or faster read speeds must select a different drive.

Questions about this item

How long does the Sata DVD-ROM drive sustain its 8X read speed before it slows down?

The drive is rated at 8X maximum Sata read speed; sustained throughput will drop once the buffer empties during continuous reading.

How much noise and heat does the FW688 produce when reading discs all day?

The internal Sata DVD-ROM runs quietly at idle and generates only modest heat during extended read sessions in an Optiplex chassis.
