Dell GU878 8X SATA Internal DVD-ROM Drive

The Dell GU878 is an 8X SATA internal DVD-ROM drive designed for Optiplex desktop systems. It provides a straightforward optical-read solution for offices or home users who still need to access legacy discs, install software from physical media, or archive data onto DVDs. The SATA interface ensures simple integration into compatible drive bays.

Capacity and headroom: what it comfortably handles.

The drive reads DVD-ROM media at up to 8X speed, which is adequate for standard software installation, document retrieval, or media playback. It does not write to any disc format, so users who need to burn CDs or DVDs will require a separate writer. Compatibility is limited to systems with an available SATA port and a 5.25-inch drive bay.

Questions about this item

Will the GU878 DVD-ROM drive work with an older OptiPlex that only has legacy SATA ports?

The drive uses a standard SATA interface, so it will connect to any OptiPlex motherboard that provides a SATA data and power connection.

How can I verify the drive reads discs at the rated 8X speed after installation?

Insert a known-good DVD-ROM disc and use a disc-info utility to confirm the reported maximum read rate shows 8X for that media.
